The Specifics
Match Clock: Each match runs on a 30-minute countdown, keeping play sharp and on schedule.
Shot Clock: Players have 30 seconds per shot (plus one 30-second extension per rack), ensuring nonstop pace and intensity.
UPscore Handicap System: Our advanced analytics-driven rating system balances competition by adjusting starting scores and tracking player performance.
Rundown-Style Matches: A groundbreaking format where higher-rated players must “chase down” and catch lower-rated opponents, creating intense comebacks and dramatic finishes.
This format transforms the playing experience. Lower-rated players start with an advantage, while higher-rated players must overcome the gap before time runs out — making every rack meaningful and every match exciting to the very last shot.
Most Divisions are double play 8-ball / 10-ball. This means your team will play 5 matches of 8b and 5 matches of 10b each night.
Don't worry, this doesn't add any extra time to the night as 8b and 10b matches are played simultaneously. Since the matches are timed at 30 minutes. The nights schedule is predictable.
For example: At 7pm 2 teams would start a match with 8b on table 1 and 10b on table 2. After the 30 minutes is up, match 2 of both 8b and 10b would start, rinse and repeat.
Team competition is at the heart of Ultimate Pool League. Whether you’re forming a new team with friends or joining an existing roster, UPL team play offers a social, competitive, and rewarding experience.
Team Size: Up to 8 players per roster
Weekly Matches: 5 players compete each night
Match Length: 30 minutes per match
Shot Clock: 30 seconds per shot (+1 extension per rack)
Team Composition Rules:
Max 2 players rated 600+ (only 1 over 700)
At least 1 player rated 450 or below must play each week
Teams compete weekly across three sessions per year. Points earned from weekly play determine standings, and the best teams advance to the Grand Final Qualifiers (GFQ). Winners there move on to the National Grand Finals, where they’ll battle for national titles, prize packages worth $6,000+, and a shot at the $100,000 top prize.
Every match in Ultimate Pool League earns teams and players points based on their performance. This ensures that every rack matters and rewards consistency and skill throughout the season.
Match Win: +5 points for a match win.
Bonus Points: +1 point for each game won beyond 0
Match Loss: Teams still earn +1 point for each game won beyond the handicap.
Match Draw: Each team receives points equal to their final score.
No Score Win: If a winning player finishes with a score of 0, no points are awarded for that match.
Maximum: A team can earn up to 20 points per individual match.
Team BYE: 20 points awarded.
Individual Forfeit: 8 points for weekly play / 20 points for GFQ or Grand Finals.
Team Forfeit: 25 points awarded.
At the heart of every UPL match is UPscore, our advanced rating and handicap system. Developed with analytics experts from Oxford University, UPscore:
Tracks and updates player ratings in real time. Updates automatically after both teams submit scores.
Levels competition using handicap scoring. The higher ranked player will start at a negative score and attempt to catch up before the 30 mins is over.
Powers the rundown-style format, ensuring every match is competitive
Uses advanced integrity tools (including facial recognition at major events)
